Voice Drift Detection: why Month 12 stops sounding like Week 1

Every AI content tool drifts. It's not a bug in the model. It's the tax of tuning. Here's how the Brain catches drift before you notice it.

What drift actually is

Drift is when output moves away from your original voice fingerprint without anyone making a deliberate decision. It's death by a thousand small adjustments.

Week 1: sounds like you. Week 6: sounds a little off. Month 3: sounds generic-AI-helpful. Your audience notices at week 6. You notice at month 3.

Why it happens to every tool

Tools without a voice fingerprint have no reference to drift from. So every new tweak feels "fine." The model regresses toward its training-data average over time because nothing pulls it back.

The tax of any tuning is drift. The fix is a reference to pull back to.

How Layer 9 catches it

Every new draft gets compared against the Voice Fingerprint saved at setup. The Brain scores drift across five signals: cadence, vocabulary, reference patterns, emotional temperature, structural preferences.

If drift crosses a threshold, the draft gets flagged. You can accept it as new voice evolution or reject it as drift. The Brain learns from the decision.

You can't protect a voice you haven't described. You can't catch drift without a reference to drift from.

The five signals that usually trigger first

In practice, drift usually starts in one of five places:

• Cadence — sentences getting longer and more uniform
• Vocabulary — generic "helpful" words creeping in
• Reference patterns — metaphors shifting lanes
• Temperature — edges softening into corporate-polite
• Structure — posts getting more predictable

The test

Find a piece of content you wrote three months ago. Generate a new piece on the same topic today. Read them back to back.

If today's version sounds warmer and safer, that's drift. If it sounds sharper and more specific, that's growth. Only one of those needs catching.
